Background
The first cloud seeding activities of record in North Dakota occurred in 1951. Farmers using ground-based generators performed this early seeding. Aircraft were first used for cloud seeding activities in 1961. This is the program that began WMI as a company in 1961, and WMI has conducted the North Dakota Cloud Modification Project for almost every season since. WMI provides the aircraft and Pilots-in-Command for the project while the North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board provides the co-pilots (UND interns), the meteorologists, the radars, and the flares and chemical used on the project.
Project Area
The current target area for the North Dakota Cloud Modification Project covers nearly 10,500 sq. miles (more than 6.7 million acres), almost 15% of the state's area. The target area is divided into two Districts:
District I: Bowman County and part of Slope County
District II: Ward, Mountrail, Williams, and McKenzie Counties
